1 week left of JLPT! How’s everyone feeling so far?

Hey everyone, here's my advice from someone who passed the N1 last December.

  1. If you're taking the N3 - N1, you've probably been consuming native Japanese material for the past year. Over this next week, however, I strongly recommend reading the Shin Kanzen Master 読解 of whatever level you're taking. This will familiarize you with the sort of passages and questions you will encounter on the actual test.
  2. My recommended order for answering questions is vocabulary, reading, and then grammar. I think you can pass the first portion of the test with vocab alone, and it should be the easiest part. You also don't want to waste your reading time by agonizing over the grammar questions. If time starts to run out, go back and answer the grammar questions as fast a possible.
  3. By the time you get to the listening section, you might be mentally exhausted. Don't let your mind wander! If you notice your concentration slipping, take a deep breath to reorient yourself.
  4. Try to relax. A timed test in a stressful environment doesn't define your intelligence or knowledge of Japanese. There's always next year too.
