The 10 Best Performances in a David Fincher Film

Wish this article bothered to dig a little deeper.

A list of great Fincher film performances that isn't one of the top billed actors:

  1. Carrie Coon (Gone Girl - Ben Affleck's sister) It's tempting to go with Tyler Perry as best surprise - he's great doing something completely different. But Carrie Coon really stood out as the sister. She's exactly the sort of normal, sane person that can be the best emotional anchor in a film filled with sleazeballs and sociopaths.

  2. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network's Eduardo Saverin) So I suppose this is one of the top billed players, but it deserves some recognition since this is sort of a thankless role - he doesn't get to have the charisma of Justin Timberlake's fun turn as Sean Parker or Zuckerberg's tics and social awkwardness to work with, or something unusual like Armie Hammer's double act as entitled twins to stand out. Garfield has to be solid and normal and emotionally anchor the movie. It's not flashy but it's really done well.

  3. James Rebhorn (The Game the CRS intake agent) is he a simple salesman or a nefarious con artist? This guy plays it both ways simultaneously and keeps the audience on edge.

  4. John Carroll Lynch (Zodiac suspect Arthur Leigh Allen) In a movie filled with great performances (Brian Cox as Melvin Belli or Charles "Roger Rabbit" Fleischer as the creeper in the basement stand out) John Carroll Lynch is especially crucial as the most likely suspect. He underplays his interrogation scene beautifully.

  5. Bob Stephenson (Fight Club airline baggage counter guy) This guy has about 30 seconds of screen time, but kills it in his "sometimes it's a dildo" speech and that amazing dismissive hand wave/head scratch.
