My stance on it is that if you’re not sitting in the jumpseat, and there’s nothing that you’re carrying that requires me to check your credentials and notify the crew and other special passengers, I don’t care if you come check in.

‘Hey, I’m _______ with _______, got a seat in the back.’

‘Ok, cool’ … then back to briefing or planning the layover.

The ALPA jumpseat guide specifies whether it’s a ‘requirement’ or ‘courtesy’ to check in if you have a seat in the back. The only Captain that was a jackass about me not jamming up his boarding coming to the cockpit to check in was on none other than Delta… wouldn’t let the gate agent close boarding and the agent came back flustered to send me up to check in… A grown man in a zipper tie attempted to talk sternly to me. I can’t take a man like that seriously.
