14 years ago today... where were you?

I was at home, getting ready for my like... Fourth day of high school. I heard the tv on and both parents taking downstairs, which was weird, because my dad usually left for work before mom drove my brother and I to the high school.

I looked off the landing down at my parents sitting on the sofa, and my dad looked up at me and said, "The United States of America is under attack."

I went downstairs with the live feed with the newscaster in a box in the corner, you could see the top of the first tower hit and a lot of smoke. The newscaster said that the second tower hit had just fallen a few minutes before, and they were going to cut from live footage to show that again. I sat between my parents and watched... As the first tower hit fell. I remember saying, "...that wasn't video. Neither tower is there anymore," and as soon as I'd said that, the newscaster cut back in, choking back tears, and said something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, that was a live feed. Both towers have fallen." Nobody said anything, not on the television which simply showed the smoke, not my parents nor I, and then my big brother came downstairs.

We went to school; the plan was that my brother was going to grab me if we were sent home and we'd walk the six miles home together.

The entire day of school, we all shuffled from class to class and watched on tv. Some students left, mostly ones who had family in New York. We were all told we could leave if we wanted to, most didn't. I think we all wanted to stay among people, no one wanted to be at home alone. My history class was the only one where we talked. The teacher was a great man, and also taught an elective course which was only current events and used Newsweek as the text book, so he gave us possible insight and asked leading questions of us. He taught us about who this Bin Laden dude was and the history surrounding him.

And... That's about it, really. It was a weird day.
