176.9?! At what point do we get some breathing room?

My point is, everyone is doing damage to the planet, it’s the globalized world we live in. Wanna pay for this damage? Then stop globalization and pay for it in increased prices of reduced goods… not some random tax that a theory says is actually a ‘natural tax’ but isn’t.

Or get more jurisdictions to adopt a carbon tax. The price of that OJ sourced from Florida will increase, and demand will decrease.

Stopping globalization is a whole other animal. I don’t necessarily disagree but let’s be honest, it’s not going to happen. If it’s not feasible (politically) it’s not really a viable solution. And I say that as someone who’s not a fan of our capitalist society.

But if I live in northern Canada

I’m all for rebates for low income folks, which the federal government’s policy incorporates. Not supportive of geographic rebates. A tonne is a tonne of CO2 regardless of location. Northerners may drive more for work but they also may own gas guzzling trucks, ATVs, boats, etc. I know quite a few that do. They don’t deserve exemption. Buy a more fuel efficient vehicle.

Same with heating. There are more ways to heat a home besides natural gas; if your home has electricity, you have other options. If you like gas, expect to pay.

Honestly this is just the beginning. Gas and diesel is going to keep going up. It’ll be well over $2/litre by 2030. New gas vehicles are being phased out and then banned. Government policy aims to decarbonize buildings and space heating. Natural gas rates will be going way up.
