18 years into my editing career, I discover a button on my keyboard that sums up a lot of my feelings about the changes in the business.

What's new is that I am now often asked to do work that previously was a whole other profession. We used to be two in the editing room, one of us being an editorial journalist, the other being a video editor. Now, I am given footage and have to put it together all by myself. What's new is that now, I am given half the time for the same amount of output that I was given 13 years ago. What's not new however is the wage I get for doing two jobs in half the time. That's the same as 13 years ago. Yeah.. it's always been a struggle. It always will be. That's part of it, but then the struggle is getting worse all the time. That's why I don't feel so good about this work anymore.
