In 1999, Ahmet Kaya was proclaimed Turkeys Artist of the Year. At the awards ceremony, he announces that his next song will be in Kurdish. Watch the video for the reaction from the crowd. He did record the song a year later in Paris, France, where he fled to. The song is called Karwan.

You know Cemal Gursel? He supported a book saying that Kurds don’t actually exist and are actually Turks. Kenan Evren? He said that Kurds aren’t real and is just the sound of your feet going through the snow- kart kurt. What do you say to this? Because it’s disgusting. Your Kurdish friends don’t say anything? Yay go them, they don’t speak for the 20 million Kurds in Turkey. Your personal experience with Kurds doesn’t represent the wider population now. Like I said, my family went through so much racism. But there’s never any accountability of Turks saying okay, you’re right there are some racist Turks out there and sadly the Turkish government does teach that, it’s not that hard
