Plot-wise, I don't really care what the book is about which, I admit, sounds a little ridiculous. To put it a different way, I don't think plot is the be-all and end-all of a great piece of literature. I think the most pleasure I get out of reading comes from noticing the writer's rhetorical skill, along with their ability to think macro about their work at the same time. Of course, though, I do experience thrills on the ride. Who doesn't want to know if Jill comes tumbling after?

I tend to prefer long, epic novels, such as The Count of Monte Cristo which was my favourite book in high school. Some other favourites/favourite authors: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, Vladimir Nabokov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Zadie Smith, Ira Levin, The Black Prince by Iris Murdoch, Chad Harbach, F. Scott Fitzgerald, the list goes on...

Speaking of Fitzgerald, I'm a person who loved The Great Gatsby. Why do people hate that book? From what I've seen I think it's because most consider his symbolism/imagery quite basic... except that's very easy to say about a book that has sat under so much scrutiny and dissection it's virtually entered American myth.

Anyway, I'll end here. Glad to hear from you and hope to gain more of your insights.
