You can't add them together. So if 100% of women and 100% of men had HSV, then 200% of the population has it??
Oh my god....it's not adding them together, it's averaging the separate statistics of men vs women with herpes with men vs women in the US, which according to the US census is roughly 50/50. You don't add the two, it's averaged, but because the gender ratio is roughly even, it comes out as if adding. Take the time to understand how that works before jumping to conclusions.
First off, that study was done TEN years ago, read the updated one, and frankly, the entire study. That study was based on people who were actually tested positive within the samples they took (which was only about 8 thousands, there's currently around 320 MILLION people, those numbers are going to be off because it's not a big enough sample compared to the actual population size) - "Of those testing positive for HSV-2 infection, 81.1% said they had never been told by a doctor or health-care professional that they had genital herpes." 40% comes from the number of people who have it (whether they've been tested or not) based off the statistics averaged by scientists found of those unaware of their status, the CDC even states that the actual number is a lot higher than what they found because of this and the sample size.
