In 2015 I did a homestay with a H'mong family in Sapa, Vietnam. After I left I framed a photo I took of them during my stay and gave it to another villager to give to them. A few weeks later, a fellow backpacker stayed with them and sent me the result!

Full story: I did a homestay with Bao and her family in a village a few hours walk from Sapa, Vietnam. Bao at the time was in her early 20's, had 2 children, and spent her days guiding treks and helping her husband in the fields. They are poor, but happy. The can't afford many luxuries, including cameras or even photos. The only photo Bao had in her entire home was a photo of her and her husband's marriage years ago.

I was so moved by the kindness of this family that back in Sapa, I printed the photo out at a print shop and found a frame at a photo shop. It took a few hours in total just coordinating everything. I had to rush to catch my bus from Sapa back to Hanoi. Once the photo was printed and framed, I gave it to another H'mong villager to give to Bao. The villagers all know each other because they're all usually in the same place in Sapa recruiting tourists to do homestays.

A few weeks later I met some fellow Canadian backpackers in Dalat, Vietnam (shout out to Maddison and Gillian!). They were headed to Sapa, and I recommended for them to stay with Bao! They eventually found her, and they snapped a photo of Bao holding the framed photo of her family. I am thankful everything worked out!
