2019 Oscars: Nominations List

I get that it's not the popular thing here to say nice things about Black Panther, but a lot of people (including me) thought that it transcended the superhero genre, and deserves special attention for that reason. Most superhero films are action driven- there's a plot but it doesn't really matter what happens, because the important parts are the fight scenes. Black Panther, uniquely among superhero movies that I've seen, felt driven driven more by politics- the action didn't feel that important. I don't think all action movies should be like this. (Actually I loved Fury Road for almost the opposite reason, 100% action!) But I do think that it makes it memorable and different.

You'll see lots of people complaining about the "mediocre" CGI and fighting in Black Panther, and I get it. I understand why as a superhero genre fan, a person would be upset with a film that spoils longstanding genre conventions. Even ignoring any kind of racial element, these are people that go to movies to see great CGI and fighting with a threadbare plot. If you're the kind of person that wants to see the same kind of movie over and over again, that's fine, no judgement. I just don't particularly value adherence to genre conventions in my own enjoyment of movies.

My girlfriend and I went to both Infinity War and Black Panther together, and we realized recently that we remember almost nothing about Infinity War. I remember the snap, but couldn't tell you much about the rest of the plot. She didn't even remember the snap. Meanwhile, Black Panther is still very fresh in my mind, and probably will be for a long time. That's one way to separate out a great movie from a good one.
