26% of Americans think that Russia was justified in invading Ukraine (38% of Democrats, 47% of people 18-34)

I’ll hazard a guess -

Maybe we can call it epistemological dissolution

I just got done reading a top thread from an anti-lockdown covid subreddit where the theme is that “covid broke me”. Essentially many, many people in there agreed that covid media coverage, govt policy rhetoric etc has absolutely destroyed any trust they had in mainstream press, social media, etc. They see propaganda everywhere. Anything establishment is 100 percent suspect to them.

As it relates to Ukraine, they said this collective conversation we are having online has really driven that home - that they find themselves unable to believe anything they read anymore. They feel the media is not just incorrect but that they’re actively lying to them.

I think we need to take this shit seriously.. I’d bet this phenomenon is way bigger than we know.

I think it speaks to the how broken our shared understanding of reality is though as a country and in the west in general. Some people really are out there on a floating island. Anchored to nothing when it comes to having some epistemological framework.

Maybe things will get better in the future. From Trump to covid to world war 3 - people are starting to embrace the abyss and reject truth
