Somebody sent this to me, and asked me what I thought about the list. For the sake of argument and discussion, I'm copying my answers here:
Think for Yourself
George was starting to get good at songwriting, but this one isn't quite there yet. Taxman and Love You To are much better. I even prefer the earlier Don't Bother Me from 64. Not a bad song, not hit material.
Two of Us
Kind of good if you think of it as being about John and Paul, but it's about Paul and Linda. Sounds unfinished to me, and it probably is. Too much of a Paul solo song.
Dig a Pony
No. Half-decent words, but it's a dog.
Here, There, and Everywhere
Masterpiece. Brian Wilson's favorite songs. One of Paul's favorite songs. Too slow and moody to be a hit.
If I Needed Someone
Good song, but same as the first. I think the author is trying to make a case for George being the "Coolest Beatle". Not a hit.
Julia
Great ballad, not a hit.
I’ve Got a Feeling
Lousy song. Nope.
Tomorrow Never Knows
This track was revolutionary at the time. I don't think 1966 would have been ready for it. One of their best masterpieces.
Long, Long, Long
Some people like this, i think it's pretty bad. No way this would be a hit.
It Won’t Be Long
Absolutely should have been a hit. But if they released it as a single, it never would have been the first thing you heard on "Meet the Beatles". One of the greatest album openers of all time. John's song, never released as a single - I guess they could only have so many #1 songs that year.
Rocky Raccoon
Novelty song. A good one, but would never be a hit.
I’m So Tired
Great album track, too slow and druggy to be a hit.
Oh! Darling
Maybe if John had sung it.
Any Time at All
I think this would have been a hit if they released it as a single. It fits with what was going on in the charts in 1964. Not as good as Can't Buy Me Love or I Want To Hold Your Hand, though.
Sexy Sadie
Good song recorded very badly - George Martin and Geoff Emerick weren't there. Sexy Sadie is "Maharishi" - George persuaded John to change it.
For No One
I can't see this being anywhere near a hit. It always seemed a poor man's Here, There and Everywhere to me. Too much Paul, again.
Blackbird
I really don't like this song. It's one of their most popular songs- I know. Not a hit - at least not in the late 60's.
She Said, She Said
Interesting. I really don't know. It's a great song. It's catchy, it's around 3 minutes. It's psychedelic, but still accessible. Very well could have been a hit - we'll never know.
Across the Universe
I don't know. Great lyrics, but never was recorded well. John tried 3 times. I think he is the only one on it.
You Won’t See Me
It's close, but no. Not single material. Not on the level of* Eight days a Week* or Help. The writers really fought to get the A-sides, and between the band, George Martin, and Brian, they really had great judgement about what to release and what wasn't good enough
I’ve Just Seen a Face
Great song, a fan favorite - very well might have been a hit in the era of Tambourine Man.
Helter Skelter
I don't know. I only like this song occasionally.
Happiness Is a Warm Gun
Best song on The White Album. Would never be a hit in a million years.
No Reply
Possibly. Great melody and lyrics. Would need slightly better mix/mastering to measure up to the level of the other Beatle singles, though.
She’s Leaving Home
This basically WAS a hit. The whole album was played non-stop all over the planet in the summer of '67. Unfortunately, no one who was there remembers the 60's.
And Your Bird Can Sing
The music is catchy. I don't think the lyrics wold have been right for hit radio at the time.
Dear Prudence
It's possible. By 1968, longer songs weren't as big a deal. Thing is, though, that there was so much material on the White album that could be released as a single, and this was hardly pop.
