I[28F] freaked out at my dad[49M] over a comment about sexual assault.

THANK YOU.

Honestly this "just teach men not to rape" business, in such a context, drives me mad.

YES, teaching consent and boundaries and respect is so important, but somebody who will drug a drink or forcibly assault a screaming, crying victim is under no delusions. They know what they are doing is wrong, and there is no just teach them not to rape bullshit.

The fact is, you always have to look out for yourself, be you male or female or anything in between. No, getting yourself blackout drunk without an amazing support network nearby does not put you at fault for being raped, not at all, but is it smart? Is it objectively safe? No. And you have to take steps to minimize risk when you can. That's just life.

Honestly I get so pissed at anyone who dismissed any measure of self-defense or prevention as sexist and crows "Just teach boys not to rape!" Maybe it's too much tumblr influence or something, but that shit has to stop.
