A 3 day break, you feel well rested. A 5+ day break, you forget how to be a productive member of society.

I'm from Slovenia and I have 22 paid vacation days. The amount depends on the education (higher the education, more vacation you get), years of employment (I believe you get at least 1 additional day every 10 years) and if you have children under 18 (1 day for every child). I started with 22 days. We also have quite a few public holidays (15, but it depends if they fall on the weekend). We need to registrate ourself when we come to work and when we leave. We work 8h workdays and if you work more than 8h, you accumulate the extra minutes/hours that you can use some other time to shorten your day or up to 5 days a year, you can take a day off if you have enough hours. This is specifically for our company, but other companies have something similar. In those 8h, there is half an hour for lunch, so tehnically we are paid for 8 hours, but work 7,5h.

The wages in our country are highly taxed, we pay a lot of contributions for health system and pension system, so the wages are not high compared to some other western Europe countries, but also the standard of living is not that high. I'm planning on starting a family soon, so I'm very happy with work - free time balance in our country. Since I can start working between 7 and 9, I can stop at 3 if I get to work early and when I will have a family, I will be able to spend my afternoons with my kids. Just another thing - the maternity leave is 1 year, fully paid, so you don't see a lot of stay at home moms.
