5 years ago, I local boy died in a car wreck on a well know residential road. Today the family received this letter from an anonymous “neighbor”.

Good god. And of course the neighbours are anonymous. Don’t have the guts to say it publicly.

This reminds me a little of an incident from my hometown when I was 18. A few weeks before Christmas, a girl I was family friends with was designated driver at a house party. She was ready to leave for the night - totally sober - but got talked in to taking more passengers than she had seatbelts for. It was a dumb mistake on her part, but I imagine many of us have been there.

Anyway, she hit a patch of ice, flipped her car, and two of her unbelted passengers were killed. Both of them were young guys, 17 years old if memory serves. Needless to say it was an absolute tragedy, even worse because it was just before Christmas.

There was a lot of grieving, and the girl I knew had reckless driving charges pressed against her by the cops. She wasn’t badly injured, but obviously she was a mess. I don’t remember where things went with the charges. I believe she was convicted, but I don’t think she went to jail. She did have a pretty serious criminal record as a result, and was in therapy for a long time.

Anyway, the family of one of the boys was out for blood. They sued her and her mother (her dad had passed away before this); some kind of settlement was reached out of court. And then, every year for the next 15 years (I’m in my 30s now) the boy’s family would take out a full page ad in the local paper on the anniversary of his death. They would memorialize him, but they would also use the ad to say thing like: “Your Car, Your Responsibility” in a pretty obvious direction at the girl I knew.

I’m not saying the family wasn’t rightfully heartbroken. But man were they ever out to make her as miserable as they could, year after year.
