58% of high-performance employees say they need more quiet work spaces

This is gonna get downvoted to hell, if anyone even reads it, but I'm a software engineer and I really like working in an open plan office. The two biggest reasons:

  • I'm naturally a competitive person, but also quite lazy. If I'm surrounded by people working hard all day, I'm gonna do the same, but if I'm surrounded by nobody and nothing I'm gonna sit here on Reddit all day and get nothing done.

  • I know exactly when to ask people questions, just be looking up. No more blockers through people not answering email or IMs for the entire day, I can just grab them when they're getting a coffee or just coming back in from lunch or something. If they're hard at work I can leave them be.

It does help that we have quiet spaces with doors too. If you have something private you want to talk about with someone or have something complex you absolutely need quiet to concentrate on, you can grab one of the side rooms. Obviously if you just sit in the side room all day every day on your own it's gonna get noticed so you have to be reasonable with it but it does help to have that space available at times.
