[788x918]East Germany apparently made it's comeback during the 2013 German elections...

For a more extreme example take the Ukraine

  1. language: The Kiev Rus state (882-1241): that's where the Ukrainian language is spoken (rather than the Russian language). They are more likely to support the nationalists.

  2. religion: The regions of Poland which didn't join Russia after the rebellion of Bohdan Chmielnicki in 1654 are Eastern Rite Catholics now, rather than Orthodox Christians. Naturally they are more opposed to Russia.

  3. nationalism mk.I: The 19th century border between Austrian Galicia, Austrian Bukowina and Austrian Hungaria still has a mark on the identities, because the Austrians supported a different kind of nationalism in each of these regions. The people from Chernovtsi (ex Austrian Bukowina) consider themselves the Hutsuls. The people from Uzhgorod (ex Austrian Hungarian) consider themselves the Ruthenians. The latter ones are, for example, somewhat Rusophiliac. Phonetically their languages are the same.

  4. nationalism mk.II: The Russian speaking regions which were added to the Ukraine in 1954 (to celebrate point 2) consider themselves an oppressed Russian minority. The Russian speakers who were already in the Ukraine since it's creation in 1917 instead consider themselves Russian-speaking Ukrainians.
