92% of Married Women in Egypt Have Undergone Female Genital Mutilation

Sorry to break it to you folks but FGM is an Islamic problem. Islam is not the only contributing factor but it is a factor; culture and tradition play huge roles as well. Think of the burqa for a moment. It was a pre-Islamic tradition that found footing in the religion because it fits with themes regarding modesty and women. It's not mentioned in the Quran but it is mentioned favourably in the Hadith. Scholars and schools of jurisprudence are divided on whether it is compulsory or encouraged. Even though culture and tradition are motivations behind the burqa, you wouldn't say that the burqa is not an Islamic phenomenon, would you?

All these same things are true of FGM.

It was a pre-Islamic tradition that found footing in the religion because it fits with themes regarding modesty and women.

It is a pre-Islamic Central African tradition. That's why we see such high rates there. It is not exclusive to Central Africa though.

It's not mentioned in the Quran but it is mentioned favourably in the Hadith.

See Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 41 for example.

Scholars and schools of jurisprudence are divided on whether it is compulsory or encouraged.

Many fatwas have been issued on the subject ranging from forbidding it to mandating it. Of the four schools of Sunni Islam, two mandate it and two find it preferable.

Consider the growing number of recorded cases in Asian Muslim communities especially Malaysia and Indonesia. Before Islam, these societies were dominated by Buddhism and Hinduism. Buddhism and Hinduism as well as Confucianism explicitly forbid FGM and it is not found in non-Islamic Asian communities. In Africa, where it began as a cultural tradition, it is found only in Islamic and Islamic adjacent communities. In Asia, where it has no cultural tradition, it is found only in Islamic communities.

It's a no-brainer, guys. When you claim it's not an Islamic problem, you're not doing the women who suffer from it any favours.
