BODY:

Entry 1494 - On Acquisitions

Well Disney Land sucked a fat one. After accepting

the offer that appeared on my comm the other day I

showed up to the airport and went to a private

terminal just behind an elf cardinal (???), a

technomancer and a deaf lady with some mean-looking

ink. The timeshare seminar on our flight down to LA

was honestly sweet relief compared to what the elf

(henceforth Robes) had to say. He might have

stopped talking between the time we boarded and the

time we got off the plane, but I must have missed

it.

Our itinerary included a cab ride to a kiddie park

next door to the main attraction, at the end of

which it became readily apparent that we were not

getting into the Magic Kingdom without ponying up

some nuyen. Johnson's local rep, Some Lady Sweating

Profusely, plays it coy and drops us the basics of

the job, then misplaces a burner link for us to

find - thirty gs in an escrow account off the bat,

more upon completion. The target: Richard Johnson. 30 to geek him, 50 to

grab him alive and deliver him. The problem? He's

the CEO of a local AA - PPIA Components, makers of

fine electronic miscellanea. Corp security,

bodyguards, guy's a tall order. Got a head like a

toaster too. Who sends four unremarkable runners

after an exec of this caliber, and where do they

get off paying us chump change?

We follow the sweating woman into the kiddie park

(scratch 500¥ each), don't even get to ride

anything, and catch her as she's leaving. This

woman's in hysterics, her husband owed money to

some nebulous syndicate so they geeked him and made

her deliver our job, and by the time Robes got that

much out of her she'd lost her marbles and park

security wanted a word with us.

Booked it out of there, got a hotel room, and our

technomancer found the goods. PPIA's got a contract

with Mitsuhama that gives MCT 49% ownership in the

event of a leadership conflict (like for instance

the CEO getting exploded), so it's a pretty good

bet we're working for the Yaks. A little more

digging revealed that our man was a hell of a

jogger, tabloids had his face plastered everywhere,

sticking out of a track suit running around Bel Air

in the dead of night. Easy enough: we disguise

ourselves (I went with obese child in a pastel

orange track suit), watch the parks for our exec to

learn his movements and protection, then snatch him

up and deliver.

Our delivery destination is 20 miles out, we needed

a ride. Rental would get us tracked to hell and

back so we went to the back of Compton and I picked

a real cherry off a used lot. Call it a handyman's

special, but one of these days when I sit down and

learn to fix cars Lady Olivia's getting the royal

treatment, and then I'm figuring out how to drive

stick. It works for our purposes so we

(temporarily) removed the 12-foot spoiler and got

ready for the grab by ensuring we'd have control

over the traffic light covering our egress.

Robes pulls a tranq gun out of nowhere, and the

next morning we wait at the park in our invisible

(courtesy the elf) Hyundai. Like clockwork our exec

comes running along, the deaf lady doses him with

Narc, pitches him in the car and we're on the move

(as soon as I found where the clutch bites - if I'm

honest I think I smelled brimstone for a second

there). We make our escape without a hitch, our

mancer and Robes' head jammer working overtime to

keep Johnson's tracking devices quiet, and pull up

to a fish cannery by the bay to deliver.

I see the deaf lady carry our man inside, Robes

follows, and after a few minutes of nothing doing a

pair of drones that had been shadowing us went in

and unloaded everything they had on something -

presumably Dick as my companions made it out alive.

When they got in the car Robes had a real sour look

on his face. I know he didn't want to turn our man

over to the Yaks and neither did I, but I accepted

sooner rather than later that if it came down to

the exec's life or mine it was going to be the

exec's, and the small army of security presumably

out to get him back didn't give us much wiggle room

in the timeline. I'm not proud of what I did, just

paid for it.

Notes:

I had a great time on this run, and really got to

explore my play style and character - I still

haven't fired a shot, maybe I'll even get to keep

it that way a while longer. Our team had good

chemistry and complementary skills (at least to my

mind), and pulled the job off without a

hitch...pretty much... Ympulse was knowledgeable

and fun to work with as always, and gave us a vivid

world to work in. I'd happily run again with

everyone involved.
