Abathur—Experiences and Tips/Builds?

Imagine this: you're on Dragon Shire, when you notice that there's a single enemy hero guarding the bottom temple. Should be easy for you if you bring a teammate along right? Then you walk through three mines, dropping you to half health the enemy hero's suddenly wearing a spike-shooting hat.

That's what Abathur does. He's not as strong as another hero physically being there, but he can be anywhere on the map as long as he has something to Symbiote to.

As an Abathur it's about positioning, really, you need to be in the right time at the right place. I very honestly think that Abathur is the biggest culprit when it comes to enabling lousy players: they think just because they're doing something, they're helping.

Anyway, some advice:

  • Always be soaking! Abathur can and should soak empty lanes very easily, communicate this to your teammates so they have more freedom to go for objectives and to pressure other lanes.
  • This is an oversimplification, but you should go for Symbiote and damage talents most of the time. Go for Locust and split-pushing talents only if your team's ahead.
  • Make Ultimate Evolution count! It only lasts 20 seconds. It actually might hit harder than the hero you cloned even without talents: some heroes like Sylvanas don't really have talents that up the damage of their basic abilities.
  • Learn to play the DPS heroes, since they'll be who you should be cloning. Some good candidates like Kerrigan and Jaina need practice for their main combos.
  • Evolve Monstrosity is strong on maps where it can gain stacks. At 30 stacks its health and damage more than double, and it becomes really strong.
  • Hivemind is by far your best 20 talent. It literally doubles the strength of your Symbiote, which is incredible because Symbiotes, unlike heroes cannot be disabled.
  • Hivemind also makes Evolve Monstrosity a lot stronger than Ultimate Evolution. Double Symbiote might actually be stronger than a single clone, and with Hivemind you can Symbiote your monstrosity and a hero at the same time.
  • That said, you still want to take Ultimate Evolution in games where your team needs mid-game team fight strength more. Monstrosity is better at 20 with Hivemind, but it doesn't matter if you've lost the game by then.
