The ABCs of Death 2 - Now Streaming on Netflix

My review from a while back...

A lot of people really hated the first one, to the point where I just say the name and people groan. I still don't understand all the hate. Yes, about 75% of the segments were objectively bad, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. For all the flack F is for Fart gets, it's obviously one of the more memorable segments. D is for Dogfight was the obvious gem, but I found segments like L is for Libido, S is for Speed, X is for XXL, and P is for Pressure to be interesting an solid additions. Again, there's plenty of horrible ones in there, but if you have some friends over and a fridge stocked with beer, ABC's of Death is a fun time.

So I stocked my fridge full of beer, ordered a couple of pizzas, and had some friends over and we watched ABC's of Death 2. Just like the first one, we all had a great time, lots of shouting at the screen, lots of pausing to reflect upon what we just watched, here (for whatever it's worth) are my takes on each segment. There are some spoilers contained within, so read at your discretion.

A is for Assassin - Seemed like a fitting opening for the movie, fun, gory, boobs, drugs, a stiff corpse vomiting maggots onto someone. What the hell else could anyone ask for? 8/10

B is for Badger - I enjoyed the acting here. The dialogue was pretty tight. I don't really know a whole lot about badgers. Were they indicating that these were ferocious mutant badgers capable of ripping a rude English gentleman in half? Or is this a capability of the common badger? I need to do a some research on badgers. The extent of my knowledge ends with the "Badgers, Mushroom" video from the early 2000s. 7/10

C is for Capital Punishment - Well directed, solid acting, gruesome as all hell, and even says a little something. 9/10

D is for Delouse - Uh, ok here's the thing. I like weird stuff. Weird is probably my favorite adjective when being used to describe a form of media. This was weird, but I don't know if I liked the weirdness here. I might have, I really loved the animation, it definitely had a cool look about it. But I didn't really care for the Tool videos that pretty obviously inspired this, and I feel confident I'll probably fast forward this upon my next viewing. I'd call it unpleasant for the sake of being unpleasant. Still, respect where it's due, and aesthetically, I really thought this was great. 4/10

E is for Equilibrium - I loved Juan of the Dead. It feels like Alejandro Brugues is really just having fun with making films, which I think is awesome. This was definitely a favorite for the evening. 9/10

F is for Falling - What amazing cinematography. Not what I was expecting from an ABCs of death entry. It's quite a feat to cram so much technical ability, character development, and solid storytelling into 3-5 minutes of runtime, but none the less, it was achieved. 10/10

G is for Grandad - This was my wife's favorite installment. This is probably the F is for Fart for ABC's of Death 2. Absolutely absurd, but pretty comical. 7.5/10

H is for Head Games - Wasn't into it. I like animation and everything, but this just felt like an experimental little piece that could have probably been done by a college student. It's not bad, it's just not something I really care for. 2/10

I is for Invincible - So this is clearly a little throwback to Evil Dead and Dead Alive splatstick, at least that's how it feels. I enjoyed this, a lot of fun, great practical effects. I'd have liked to see this as a feature. As a short, I'm not sure it really works all that well. 6.5/10

J is for Jesus - Just perfect. I'm not a religious guy, so I wasn't offended by anything in this segment. Has a bit of a Clive Barker-esque atmosphere about it. The torturers faces from the POV of the man being tortured made me feel sick on my stomach. Brilliantly executed little flick. 10/10

K is for Knell - I'm trying to figure out if this one is about a woman who is utterly insane, or if the world is in fact ending around her. Another one, like I is for Invincible, I would have liked to see fleshed out more. Obviously that can't be done in a movie like ABCs of death, but that's just my gripe to the filmmaker. If you can't fully realize your vision within the confines of the medium you are given, then save it for another day. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe this is all the story they wanted to tell, but it felt to me like there was some exposition I was missing. Another segment with excellent aesthetics, a killer concept, and a mediocre execution. 6/10

L is for Legacy - This is stupid as fuck. 0/10

M is for Masticate - Obviously I had seen this entry before the movie came out, and I still love it as much as I did then. Perfect fit for this type of project. Works like a joke with a predictable punchline. But if you're listening to the joke simply for the punchline, you're listening for the wrong reasons. Robert Boocheck is making you fully enjoy the journey before ultimately arriving at a veritable "Well that's a hell of an act, what do you call it? THE ARISTOCRATS"!!! 10/10

O is for Olocracy - I like this one a lot more in theory than I do in practice. There is one scene in particular, however that plucked a pretty robust laugh from me. One in which the main character tries to escape the courtroom. We see the door open from the other side and there's a very Romero-esque zombie hoard pulling her back inside. Well done. I think I would have liked it more without the almost gratuitous twist at the end. Regardless, not bad. 7/10

P is for P-P-P-P Scary - I get it. I get what they were going for (mostly), I get that this seems to be a favorite among viewers of this film. I found it annoying as all hell, and was really ready for it to end when it finally did. 1/10

Q is for Questionnaire - There was something oddly melancholic about this one, even though I've heard a lot of people refer to it as light-hearted. I really enjoyed it and it creeped me right the hell out. Mostly because I am the kind of gullible asshole who would sit down for a sidewalk intelligence test and then go with the person who administered in hopes of getting offered my dream job. This movie will do for IQ tests what Jaws did for giving long monologues about the USS Indianapolis. 10/10

R is for Roulette - I like to think of myself as fairly perceptive when it comes to film, music, art of any kind really. I really really didn't quite understand the ending of this one, but I really wanted to. I loved the segment, generally speaking, I just wish I understood what happened there at the end. He shot her and then... there was a noise upstairs? I'm not sure how I feel about it as a whole. ?/10

S is for Split - Solid. A little by the numbers, but again, something I would expect from an ABC's of death segment. Damned brutal. 9/10

T is for Torture Porn - What the hell? If there was a place for this segment anywhere, it would be within the world of ABCs of Death. This feels like it would have fit very well in part one. Not completely unenjoyable. 5.5/10

U is for Utopia - I can't remember what the amount was, but it seems like it was $5,000 that each director was given for a budget on each segments. Certain ones seemed like the filmmaker spent about $263 on their film budget and pocketed the remaining $4737.00 (I'm looking at you Ti West). Then there's ones where I feel like the filmmaker must have went over budget and started dipping into their own cash. This is one of those segments. Beautiful. 10/10

V is for Vacation - I believe it was AICN who said this felt like it belonged more within a V/H/S segment than ABCs of Death. I fully agree with that, however if it had been in a V/H/S segment, it would have been one of my favorites. I thought the acting was actually pretty solid. Whoever it was playing the friend was fucking dedicated to that role. No one can fake putting your nose 3 inches away from an anus and taking a seriously deep breath, and that guy fucking did it. Kudos to you my man. Fun little piece. 9/10

W is for Wish - Another that would have been right at home with the weirdness of ABCs 1. The first time you watch it, it basically leave you scratching your head and saying "what the fucking fuck" over and over again. After about 48 hours of reflection, I think this one is extremely dark and twisted. I liked it quite a bit. 9/10

X is for Xylophone - This is almost cheating. Of course the guys who made Inside are going to make something awesome. They even used Beatrice Dalle. Fucking perfect segment. Nothing much to say. 10/10

Y is for Youth - This one is extremely unsettling for me for some reason. Visually it's stunning. Conceptually it's unique and intriguing. The execution is perfect. But I didn't enjoy watching it. There must be some kind of underlying issue with me that those visuals tapped into, because I found it difficult to look at the screen for most of the segment. 9/10

Z is for Zygote - Uncomfortable, very uncomfortable. Beautiful, very beautiful. Now a question: at the end, was it the zygote that was snapping the mother's bones and tossing out her organs and then taking her form? Or was it the mother going inside herself and tossing the bones and organs of her unborn out, and then re-assuming her shape? I only ask because when the father got home, she was acting as her normal self. Regardless, it's one of the best segments in there, and I loved it. 10/10

Overall? I'd say the quality of ABCs 2 far outweighs the quality of the first entry. I hope to see more of these, I'll never stop watching them. Anthology horror is my favorite kind of horror, and until we get an OFFICIAL Creepshow 3, ABCs of Death and the V/H/S films will be filling that void.

I doubt anyone read all of this, but if you did, thanks for reading.
