Admin wants “company coming over” observations.

Exhausting and like the crap it stepped in :) Bit of grass, too. You know the smell. Its around us every day.

Whenever a new system is rolled out, I ask myself, “Is (the best school) in the state doing this? No? Then who benefits from this system? I like to point out those teachers that avoid toxic practices while getting the best results. I like to point out how there are those with conflicting theories and practice that also get great results. I recognize that some people with less than three years of teaching should NOT run multi-million dollar “meta-data” companies that define our systems and practice.

I want to make sure I can push the system enough to make the changes necessary so I can be the principal I needed when I was expelled from my high school for being queer. I want to make sure my school has support so that teachers can take risks with lesson-planning to become master teachers without burning out from being overworked from a job they’re not getting paid enough to do. Teaching should not be run like Amazon warehouses with fast turnover! I want to be aware of how to keep what is precious to the school while allowing actual innovation in, even if its a 1960’s direct instruction with chunking, because that works surprisingly well for ADHD kids. I want calculus teachers to not panic over not putting on puppet shows every day to get kids to do work.

I still want to make sure we’re not giving lessons that only serve the cultural norms of the dominant culture. I want to make sure the cultural structures and bicultural needs are taken care of. I want to make sure we did everything in our power before we send a kid to alternative school, and recognize racism, classism, and ableism in making those decisions, while maintaining that we’re not just keeping the kids that would benefit from going to alternative school or other options with more resources.

And I want to make sure you can go home to your family every night knowing you are cared for and supported.

Because even as a teacher, I had to lick those boots, as a minority, to keep earning my paycheck… and I am sick of doing nothing about it.
