Advice for Internships?

I'll agree with the other commenter, most students don't really get to break into the industry until after 3rd year in my experience. I think there is a reason for that though, as other than slaving away as a script monkey, I think it takes up to that point in order to become useful as a developer. Software architecture, quality assurance, algorithms, operating systems, databases, etc. were all topics I found myself coming back to constantly while on my internship and all were courses I took in third year.

However, that isn't to say you shouldn't try again next summer, I'd still highly encourage you to send out as many applications as you can. But it's important to realise why you're not getting any responses - employers just don't think you're ready yet. In the meantime, if you are able to have a way of showing that you are ahead of where employers think you are, things like side projects or extracurriculars, that would greatly improve your chances of breaking into the industry earlier.
