Advice for picking a Rate

Nuke!

Honestly...it doesn't really matter what your rate is. You will get a lot of opportunities post military if you plan ahead, save your money, and see shit through.

I know plenty of folks that had "good" rates when it came to transitioning out of the military...and then ended up in a bottle or homeless.

One of the most successful people I knew in the military is the supervisor of a port in Singapore and he was a cook on an aircraft carrier. He used his college benefits to get an electrical engineering degree and from there, he has just been moving forward.

I ended up meeting up with him because I was at the port to commission their new quay cranes, I heard his voice on the radio and did a double take.

We cranked together and I covered his ass one time. That project went crazy smooth compared to my usual gigs.

There really is no "perfect" rate. The biggest influence on your day to day quality of life is going to be your immediate command. Your post navy success is entirely in your hands. Transitioning from the military was one of the hardest things I ever did in my life and I only was in for six years.

Save your money if you go in. Have long and short term goals to be constantly working towards. Your contract is going to seem like a life time...and next thing you know, its over.
