advice from the Buddha

Not only are you dead wrong in adapting the Buddha’s words to your intent here... you’re also way off base psychologically as it is a known fact that whatever desire you deny will simply well up until it is so powerful that it can force itself into your consciousness (in the case of SR this would be a relapse.)

Instead what is called for is to practice equanimity. Recognize the thing for what it is - a passing desire - and maybe sometimes you act on it and other times you don’t. Either way as long as you are giving it only dispassionate attention (not identifying with it) you are making progress. Eventually the dispassionate observation of your desire leads to a self understanding, which brings about an inner transformation, which causes the object of your desire to transform as well.
