IT after 40

I'm 37 and have a good chance of continuing in my current job as a sysadmin in a university group until 50+. Although my job is more stable than a corporate job, there is definitely a possibility of layoff any time before retirement, and becoming unemployed and unemployable. Promotion to management is unlikely, and I'm not sure I would want to bother with funding proposals or work with the higher-up boss. My group is very small, and I don't have the non-IT domain expertise, nor have I been great at what I do.

I have a degree in computer science, and I program as part of my job and work with newer, DevOps-type technologies and the cloud, but the scale of everything I do is tiny.
