After all these years, how does everyone feel about mass effect's ending?

The ending hasn't changed and neither has my opinion of it. I don't think the red ending feels right because the message of the inevitable clash between organics and synthetics conflicts with the message sent by EDI's increasing understanding and curiosity (not to mention the peace between Quarians and Geth, if you pursue that), and the game gives us no way to reconcile those two messages. This is because those sections were written by different people at different times. It hurt the narrative's overall consistency.

I think the beginning of the end was earlier, in Mass Effect 2. I remember an interview with Chris L'Etoile where he says Sovereign was written as a post-singularity species, it had more to do with mind-uploading. The organic-synthetic hybrid concept was just for husks, it was only applied to Reapers from Mass Effect 2. The change came from the guys "upstairs". Bioware stopped being independent when they got bought after Jade Empire, but Mass Effect and Dragon Age were being developed at that time so I'm guessing te overlords couldn't be as "claws in" for them as for newer titles.
