After Orlando, time to recognize that anti-gay bigotry is not religious freedom: Neil Macdonald - Politics

Some religious people think that their religiosity grants them super powers on the psychological level.

Special knowledge

The basis of most, if not all, religions is that the followers are imbued with a "revelation", a special knowledge of the "real truth" that is only known to them. They are being told that they understand the entire universe, how human relations should work, how society should function, etc. This idea that they understand the world better than the non-followers give them license to say and do the things that can range from wonderful humanist acts, all the way to the most unspeakable evils.

It also imbues them with the idea that they, as the only "proprietor" of the truth, are entitled to direct society, to control other people's actions and to exact punishment on those who will not listen.

Special rights

As the owners of the "only truth", some feel that they should be imbued with special rights that only them should enjoy, such as being able to disregards some laws and rules in the name of the special knowledge their religion gives them.

A special place in society and in creation

The believers are told that they are special, that they are the "chosen ones", that they will be granted immortality in a blissful place called Heaven and that all these are only available to those who believe.

The right to impose their views on others

Most religions demand that their followers work to grow that religion's numbers for a couple reasons:

  • More followers means more influence for that religion.

  • More followers lessens the chances that a follower will encounter someone who disputes the "truth" of that religion, hence reducing the possibility of protest and dissent against the leaders of the religion.

Because followers are instructed to "recruit" new members, some religious people will try to impose their religious views by any means necessary. If they have access to political office, they will try to impose laws that fit their religious ideology on everyone to compel them to live according to their religious doctrine, even if the rest of society does not want to participate in that religion.

Some religious people are irrational

Believing in revealed truth makes people irrational, makes them reject anything that contradicts their religious views, like science, philosophy and reason.

Because they are convinced that they hold the only truth, it is therefore useless to argue with most religious people. Their answers are scripted, they will always bend reality to fit their religious views.

The best we can hope is to show these people that their religion can be wrong and to allow them to figure this out by themselves so their intellect can take over from religious endoctrinement and hopefully allow them to realize that they MAY not know everything.

Religion must die for mankind to survive

Because religion deals with revealed truth, because doctrine is unchangeable and because arguing with religious people is ultimately useless, it becomes clear that if mankind is to survive, that religion must lose most of its power and maybe even religions need to disappear.

Religious people are afraid of death

The entire basis of all major religions is that passage on Earth is merely a mandatory step towards eternal life in Heaven. Therefore, deeply religious people will spend their entire life preparing for Heaven at the expense of doing what's good for the planet and for society. Fortunately most religions include great humanistic principles but most also include horrible things such as hating on those who do not conform to their religious views and attempting to impose those views on everyone, either by convincing them or by compelling them by force.

All in all

  • Religious people are told from a young age that only THEM understand the truth, because it has been revealed to them by either God or a Prophet.

  • Religious people think that by imposing "their truth" on everyone, they are servicing God and servicing those who have not yet accepted the revealed truth.

  • Religious people believe that they should not be held to the same standard s everyone else, that their special knowledge entitles them to disregard the laws of men in favor of what they are being told is the divine law or the desires of God.

  • Religious people believe they are on a sacred mission to save the world and bring the world closer to their God and that entitles them to do the best and the worst things, from helping the poor all the way to mass genocides.
