After ‘six months of hell,’ student accused of rape acquitted by jury

tl;dr: both men and women are harmed by the patriarchy, feminism is about equality, even highly intelligent and well-informed people can disagree and it's not always because of cognitive bias

The number of men who get raped is also much higher than most people are aware of, and the rate of reporting is even lower than for women because of the social stigma attached to it. Male rape is mysterious and nobody even knows how many men and boys it happens to, because they're so unlikely to report it, but the number is definitely high. I can find you some more estimates of that too but they're loose and I'm sure you can Google them. I'm curious where you got your figure of 40% and what you mean by "affirmatively proven false." Do you mean something like "definitively proven" or "conclusively proven?" I think maybe you're using the term affirmatively because of an association with the root firm, but normally I'd interpret affirmative as relating to an assertion of truth, not the strength of a claim, but that's just me. I'm always interested in dialgoue.

Just a point that male rape is also an important feminist issue because of the cliche that "the patriarchy harms both men and women." Feminism is about equality. I think the problem a lot of people have with feminism is actually a problem with lower level thinking, where a lot of feminist advocates, especially women, have certain knee-jerk reactions which can be counter-productive or intellectually unimpressive. For instance, I'm studying rape culture at the moment and at my institution I've had the temerity to suggest that (a) gender roles might not be entirely socialized, (b) that some reactions to different genders might actually be biological and (c) that there are identifiable neurological differences linked to gender and sexual orientation, and been dismissed or sneered at by academic staff and students in the female-dominated campus on those occasions. I think what happens is low-level thinkers tend to assume that one side of an argument or another is stupid and then assume the side they disagree with is dominated by low-level thinkers, and indeed the loudest voices are shouting the simplest and least subtle messages, such that both sides miss a lot of the subtleties. But in fact both sides have thinkers at all levels who are willing to varying degrees to acknowledge the subtleties and complexities of the subject they're discussing, and one of the worst things we can do is forget this and assume we're arguing only with idiots or the ill-informed. What actually happens is that highly intelligent people get really good at (a) attacking their opponents' arguments and (b) defending their own, so that they can become more entrenched in their false beliefs. We're all aware of this and so we accuse others of biases which we ourselves exhibit.
