Age gap, religion differences, and indecisiveness.

My husband and his ex wife are both Muslim (and I'm I guess a very confused ex-Christian).

There definitely can be some different cultural expectations around stuff like dating, marriage, parenting, and husbands financially providing for their wives. My husband and his ex wife are also from another country, so some of that is probably cultural, but it's also tied into religion.

I think what helped for us is explicitly spelling out what we are thinking / feeling with each other. A lot of the implicit assumptions we were starting from were not the same, and we had a lot of miscommunications early on in our relationship. A big one for us was the dating vs marriage thing you mentioned here.

But, not that it's up to me to say, I think Islam is a very reasonable and straightforward religion. There are definitely some other religious groups in the US that are way farther out there.
