Air Force repeatedly failed to notify FBI about gunman prior to Sutherland Springs massacre

I agree with your assessment, but I can see another side; specifically being a "prohibited person" as a temporary status and regaining your rights afterward.

For example, a redditor found himself falsely categorized as a "prohibited person" for buying firearms. His NICS background check came back as a "deny" every time. He tried to provide documentation to the FBI, he tried to clear his name through the normal channels... But he could not.

Budget cuts and staffing freezes meant there were no personnel available to process appeals. There was zero recourse. The redditor had to hire a lawyer out of pocket and endure a protracted legal battle; just to prove that he was a legal firearms owner all along.

Facing a legal battle like that is a life-changing event. SERIOUS changes would need to be made in the government to make regular "temporary bans" viable.
