AITA for donating an organ while I am still alive?

Judgement wise: NAH.

I can understand Grandma being worried, I mean, if she knows you're depressed she might be worried you're trying to indirectly kill yourself. She might be worried you're trying to make yourself "feel useful" by using donations like this, but knows that this won't help your mental health in the long run and add unneeded physical and maybe financial strain as well, which could exacerbate your depression.

I would definitely do a ton of research before making a decision though, after all it's still a major surgery. Some insurances don't cover the operation and recovery. Some bodies can't function with only one kidney, as some kidneys aren't as efficient as others. You probably do have to go through a number of health tests to be a living donor, and also some donors do experience chronic pain (though it's said to be rare). What I'm saying is, set up an appointment with an actual doctor to get all the info you need and to find out if you and your organs are healthy enough. Also, if you're having mental health issues please see some one to address these issues of depression and self-loathing.
