You are being massively controlling and had no right to throw out her stuff. It was not yours to throw out. This was a bully move however you want to look at it.

The reasonable move would have been to leave her alone and allow her to enjoy her purchase. If you feared she was substituting medicine for snake-oil THEN you should have looked up the snake-oil and showed the info to her before SHE made the decision to throw it out.

Sounds like you are a tyrant in the household still thinking that it was within your rights to take her stuff and throw it out, without a discussion might I add.
