AITA for surrendering my sister's child to protective services when she forced me to babysit due to mental health?

No offense, but the way you say that makes it sound like you’ve never had a struggle before in your life. OP posted here, so he obviously has access to the internet, and likely a phone. It’s not hard to say, “hey, I’ve got family issues. I’ll be back in a few days.”

Three year olds don’t sleep in a crib, and he could have called CPS and asked for support. They would have thrown him ~$400 a month, paid for (and helped him find) daycare, he would have gotten WIC and food stamps. Medicare would have also been provided, assuming the child had any medical needs while in his care.

I think OP has more going on than he’s letting on here, either that or he’s just an insensitive prick. Either way, when he dies old and alone surrounded by beer bottles and infested with maggots, no one will care. Certainly not his nephew.
