AITA for wanting to rehome our 3 cats my wife’s attached to?

YTA- It seems that you THOUGHT you wanted a cat because you like the IDEA of them. The difference between pet owners are the ones who treat the animals as family, and those who treat them as- well- animals.

As an example; I've known people who loooove dogs and treat them like babies. Each dog being referred to as he/she/name and treated with love and respect you would your own family/friends. However, they thought cats were cute too and adopted one. But, the difference here was that they treated the cat as an "it" and a wild animal in their home. Some people forget that cats can have just as much emotions and personality as dogs do, and its not simply "theyre a cat so they do cat things". Because of this lack of connection, the cat will learn to be reliant on itself as a wild animal would, and not care for humans. Also, the human no longer cares for the cat since they never tried to bond with them. They simply exist together and everything becomes transactional.

But more on your situation- you were unsatisfied with the first kitty so instead of giving them up, you bought ANOTHER cat. In which you were STILL unsatisfied since they weren't cuddly enough, so you brought in yet ANOTHER. 3 cats and youre still unhappy with them. This also shows how immature these decisions were to begin with. You clearly didn't do enough research first, but you also kept trying to remedy the bad situation by piling on more cats, without even thinking of the financial consequences or the increased cleaning/care you would have to provide. Pets are a commitment, not a toy or fashion statement. They are family. Adopting a pet is like adopting a child. Remember this for if you want to try owning a pet in the future when you're better prepared. I also think some places allow you to foster a pet before adoption as a sort of trial run. Also, perhaps you could still keep the calico since it seemed she worked out for you two. As long as she isn't a bonded pair with the other two cats. From your story, it seems you were okay taking care of 1 cat, but got overwhelmed after that. I'm not gonna tell a new pet owner not to own pets, since of course you'll have to learn some things as you go, but please give them more love and do more research on taking care of them (if you decide to keep any).
