Alignments should be taken out of DnD entirely. Change my mind.

It's no an issue when people actually understand what alignments mean.

Good and Evil describe the intent behind a character's action, Lawful and Chaotic describe the way they go about these actions.

Evil is ill intent. It means disregarding the well-being of the general populace for the sake of increasing one's own, or a small select number of individuals, well-being.

Good is, well, good intent. Doing things for the good of society as a whole - even if that may come at the suffering of the few.

Lawful means predictability. A character follows ANY set of rules, guidelines, codices, whatever. Because of this, their reactions and action in certain situations can be accurately predicted, if one were familiar with the guidelines they believe in. Most importantly, it's not just THE law, as in the legal code of whichever form of government currently applies. Of course, it can be the law, but it doesn't HAVE to be. This is probably the most misunderstood part of alignment. It's called Lawful, not Legal.

Chaotic means unpredictable. Acting on a whim, with no discernible pattern to it. Just doing what you feel like at the moment.

Neutral plays a very important part. Because neutral means you don't tend towards either extreme. I'd say most normal, sane characters should be one form of neutral in their alignment. Because having characters that go towards both extremes is very rare, especially in regards to Lawful/Chaotic.
