Why all the hate for "Ready Player One"?

My problem wasn’t the constant pop culture references, it was the feeling that the author was so bitter about it somehow. It was like the ultimate revenge of the nerd fantasy, the scene when the protagonist visits aech‘s chatroom for the first time was so cringeworthy to me. I mean it‘s 2018; being a nerd is kind of normal, this just feels so outdated.

Then the love story was just so weird to me. In the beginning the protagonist (I forgot his name to be honest) describes how all the women have the avatars of skinny bitches or porn stars - but of course not the girl he has a crush on - she is sooo different, I felt like reading an r/NeckbeardStories post.

Then there was Halliday and his weird tidbits of ‚wisdom‘, a fourteen year old could have deeper and better insights on life.

And of course another reason I was so disappointed in it was just that it was so hyped up. It probably would not gather as much hate if it wasn’t that popular.
