Strictly speaking, socialism is the ideology of trying to set up communism.

Practically speaking, conflating socialism and social democracy shouldn't be an issue. Establishing communism through socialism is only possible through revolution and putting a single party in control of the entire economy, in practice this always results in a totalitarian state :because politics: (any further clarification is beyond the scope of a single reddit comment)

This leaves "proper socialism" as a complete crapshoot, resulting most "socialists" in politics taking a social-democratic approach, diluting the term "socialism" even further.
