Why do almost all Americans live in detached suburban houses?

Edit:

I lived most of my life in rowhouses. They would probably be small for American standards, but I'm used to it so for me it's fine. I never had problems with neighbours but yeah if you don't get along, it can become very stressful. Noise is not really a problem because houses are made of thick layers of brics. I also like to have a small garden, not too much work.

Big houses are getting really expensive here to maintain. The government makes people isolate their walls, roofs, windows to fight climate change. Energy prices are also going through the roof. So a lot of them are bought up by real estate developers and replace them with appartments.

A lot of appartments are shitty here with bad sound isolation. Alot of these are located in area's that have lots of problems with street harrasment, petty crime, littering... I lived in one for a while and was happy to leave.

Not many people live in a secluded part surrounded by nature here. There is indeed not enough space here. Seems nice though.
