Almost Fresh Out of College - Single Bedroom Apartment

Design, from the colors and spacing to the textures, all play into this creative sandbox that I’ve fallen in love with. Exploring design in various facets has been a huge part of my life from the moment I learned to use a camera. I’ve studied it in college and it plays a huge role in my work. Now, I’ve decided to apply this passion to this little place I call home.

This year, I started to live by myself after living with another roommate in the same apartment. Now having this space all to myself, it really felt like it needed a makeover to really make it match my vibe and aesthetic. So me and my good friend decided to come together and dive straight into this interior design project.
Originally the place came with light-beige walls that kept the place feeling darker than it should be. I also still had a bunk-bed and a clunky desk taking up a lost of space in the bedroom. Most of my little things felt like they didn’t really have a specific place making it feel cluttered. I had most of the furniture in my living room and kitchen

So to change all this, we started with a brainstorm session going over every little details from the lighting, to the colors of the space, to what functionality we wanted out of the place. A few points from our brainstorming session:

  • We love the feeling of open lighting and wanted as much of it as we can. To liven and make the space feel brighter, we went with all white walls.
  • We love our music, but hate noise complaints. So we wanted to soundproof the place
  • Being from the heart of the Silicon Valley, we wanted to incorporate some smart technology into the space.
  • Wanted functional shelving for kitchen appliances and small items
  • We love simplicity, so we wanted to keep the space as minimal as possible to have a very open space layout

The end result………

To brighten the place we chose to paint all the walls white. We also installed these DIY rustic-looking shelving made from wood and industrial piping in the kitchen and above the cabinets next to the closet. In the bedroom, we placed a beautiful dark queen bedthat matchesthe shelving. For storage we used wood and stacked concrete bricks to make a storage unit for placing small items around the bedroom. We moved around the furniture and art to maintainfeeling of a spaciousspace.
We wanted to make the place smart, so we installed an apple homepod that controls the lighting and music by simply saying“heysiri”. The lights also have the option to change to any color to match the mood of any moment. The place also has a smart lock for keyless entry and full security system for piece and mind for when i’m not home.

As I continue to live in the place, I plan to bring some greenery with some plants and continue to tastefully curate my art. Living in the place has felt amazingonce this project came to a full circle. It has enabled me to work onmy creative process within my own place and freed up my mental space. I love the feeling of having more natural light in the place. It makes getting up that much better. I’d like to thank all my influences and inspiration and excited to hear everyone’s comments.
