Altered states vs. altered traits

Okay, this gives me the chance for a little bit of a rant.

Does anyone disagree and feel their experiences during meditation are the reason they meditate?

One of my favorite analogies to meditation is fitness. Is it okay to do fitness to look good naked? Of course it is! Is it okay to do fitness to feel better in everyday life? Of course it is! Is it okay to do fitness without regard to feeling better in everyday life? Of course it is!

Everyone who tells you differently is being a prejudiced ass preaching from a high horse.

No matter why you do it, it is great that you do it, you are appreciated, and welcome! That's an attitude I try to display and cultivate in regard to meditation. It's the attitude among most of the fitness people I have encountered so far, and I want it to be like that for meditation too. That freedom, and that lack of moralizing, is something I appreciate very much about that community.

So you can guess my opinion on meditation: Is it okay to do meditation for the happy moments on the cushion? Of course it is! Is it okay to do it for enduring insight into the deepest mysteries of consciousness? Of course it is! Is it okay to do while disregarding any benefits or effects it may have on everyday life? Of course it is!

No matter your motivation, no matter why you do it, it is fine.

And you may also guess the reason why I am calling this a rant: It's very common in this community here to have opinions contrary to that. Just look at the other comments.

"We do it so we won't be kidnapped and controlled by our fantasizing and wanting", "What we are really looking for during meditation is to develop more calmness, clarity of mind, more intelligence, more critical thinking skills, more rationale, and more virtuosity since these things carry over to our day to day lives", to paraphrase /u/Answerii and /u/coldweatherblues.

The first person plural here seems misplaced. We don't. You do. You don't know about me.

Or I have misunderstood this "we" in a way I didn't think about (majestic plural?).
