I don't think discipline is an issue. I think perception of discipline is an issue. You never know unless you are objectively evaluated by an outside party. In my case, here's what went down:

My PI in grad school said I don't have discipline and don't know what I'm doing.

I win an award for best experimental presentation at a conference a few weeks later.

I'm in engineering, which doesn't have much room for really bad work to be looked on as good work with unbiased reviewers. At the most, average work might be mistaken as good work.

My PI did not even congratulate me on the award and instead told me that I just don't have what it takes to be a PhD level research engineer.

He also constantly takes snipes at my undergraduate institution (which is of equal rank).

I don't think this is a discipline problem if I am winning awards at conferences. I think it is a problem with people perceiving ENFPs as not intellectual because of the way we act and talk, not because of our actual merit.
