I am an employee of Okuma America Corp., a world leader in CNC machine tools, AMA!

To be fair, that is not exactly an honest portrayal of current events regarding Doosan. Doosan partnered with Ellison Technologies last fall, and now Ellison is now their US Distributor. This is a huge score for Doosan as Ellison is a well established distributor with an large existing infrastructure and support network in place.

As most of you are aware, Ellison historically has ranked number one in sales, service and engineering support in their regions in the US CNC industry. Ellison was up until recently partnered with Mori Seiki. Mori Seiki is Okuma's main rival for market share in the US when considering prestige, pricing, technology, etc. Okuma has similar distributors to Ellison such as Gosiger, Morris, etc. Okuma's distributors are no doubt great partners for Okuma USA. Doosan has gained an equal level of distribution and support and are absolutely 180 degrees from "uncertain". This brings a huge amount of legitimacy to the Doosan's US operations. The sole reason Mori split from Ellison was Mori Seiki DMG decided to go factory direct and eliminate using a distributor/middle man altogether. They are the first large CNC manufacturer to strike out on their own, as even Haas Automation is not totally factory direct.

The fact is Doosan having Ellison means that Doosan support is now equal or greater than the other big CNC manufacturers. As you are an Okuma representative, I understand neglecting to complete answering the question. But the original question should not have been asked to a biased party. Asking Okuma about Doosan is like asking Toyota about Hyundai, or Sony about Samsung. Or even kind of like asking Marlboro if cigarettes are a healthy habit. You'll get an answer, but not exactly an accurate one.

That being said, Okuma makes a stellar machinery and I enjoyed operating them for years. Doosan is almost in a separate market compared to Okuma and Mori Seiki and their product pricing.

A good analogy would be to compare Okuma and DMG Mori CNC's to BMW and Mercedes automobiles. Doosan should be compared price point and feature wise closer to a Volkswagen vehicle. They make a decent quality machine that gets you from point A to point B reliably, but you are going to forgot bells and whistles such as a proprietary NC control, the sheet metal might not fit as precisely, and the screws and guides are just below top of the line. Regardless of you need to choose among the three CNC brands, then it comes down to what you need machined, time trials, projected downtime,, and price. Service and support is great for all three. If anything I would be most worried about Mori support as they are busy building theirs from the ground up. But given their legacy I wouldn't be to worried.

Lastly Okuma has had rocky relationships in their past with certain distributors in the past and it could happen again, the same can be said for every CNC brand and distributor in the industry. Reasons can vary but it's happened to all in the past and bound to repeat history at some point in the future.
