Am I being unreasonable?

students are notoriously bad at self-assessment especially when it comes to their writing. It may be that case that you are among the vast majority of students who turn in really sub par essays thinking they're either magnificent or at least passable

I completely agree. Though I didn't think my paper would be "magnificent" by any stretch of my own imagination, and I had put a lot of effort into it.

I've talked to others about it, and from what they've told me I haven't found anything materially important to distinguish their papers from my own. Sure, they made certain different choices as far as layout and so on is, but that's not to say that my choices weren't legitimate as well, to the best of my knowledge. Which is also why I find this so confusing.
