Is there anywhere left to go?

I actually spent several minutes wondering about that after reading your post. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be to think of a new way of communication that would be better, or more convenient than what we have now.

For the most part, we're basically already at the same "level" of communication technology as Star Trek. Even the padds (personal access display device, equivalent to e-readers) in Star Trek are bigger and bulkier than a lot of our smartphones. Our phones even hold far more information than their padds do, and that's 22-24th century technology in that universe.

Subspace communication in Star Trek, which allows for information to travel faster than light speed, is an interesting idea. But even if we could do it, I'm not sure how useful it'd be until we figure out interstellar travel.

Anyway, one thing that could be a communication advancement in the not too distant future is some sort of implant/other technology that would allow information to be shared via telepathy somehow, if it's even possible. I'm not sure how many people would accept or use it though if there was even a chance our thoughts could be heard by intel agencies/government/whoever.
