I am Greg Boyd. I am a theologian, pastor, author, teacher, drummer and lover of speed metal. I love thinking outside the box and responding to questions, so…on Jan 15, 1pm (CST), AMA!

Hey Greg, podrishioner and fan here, thanks for doing this AMA!

I recently graduated from, and currently work for, "the World's Largest Christian University" (a google search will probably ring a bell). There have been a lot of things on my mind over the past few years in regards to American Evangelical culture, and living and working in a place like this has sometimes made me feel pretty alone in my concerns. Then my wife and I discovered your web content, and after going through your “Rescuing Revelation” series and reading “The Myth of a Christian Nation”, we have both been extremely encouraged, because we don’t feel quite so alone. We are surrounded by a version of Christianity that has been hijacked by nationalism and political agendas, a growing “apocalyptic fever” and fixation with rapture theology, and a narrow approach to scripture on issues ranging from Creation (Young Earth Creationism is the only acceptable view), to alcohol consumption (students and employees are not allowed to drink alcohol).

Because the University is such a huge part of the local economy and culture, this mindset has seemingly bled over into a lot of local churches, and most churches seem to be just an extension of the University. This has made it very difficult for my wife and I to find a church we feel comfortable calling home. At this point, we would much prefer to stay at home and listen to your sermons together and take notes and discuss them. But, we feel that fellowship and service with other believers is important, or “Kingdom” as you would say. So we don’t know what to do. Don’t get me wrong, there are great people here who I love and who love Jesus, but at times living here has caused me to be jaded and cynical towards American Christianity, because I know this isn’t just a local problem – it’s a mindset that is widespread and dominant throughout the country. So my question is, how should I combat that jadedness and cynicism? How should I go about interacting with my neighbors here? And should my wife and I just suck it up and start attending a local church, in spite of our disagreements with where they place their focus?

Thanks!
