I am the Head Stage Carpenter/Flyman for an "A-house" theatre in Canada. AMA!!

I'm an actor and stage carpenter at a small community theatre. I wish I could just act, but there are only so many people around who are handy (and don't mind working for free). Sets are relatively simple. I can only imagine the art and complexity of the work you do at Neptune.

My question: do you find it depressing when you strike a set? I do. As an actor I don't mind the end of a run. But dismantling the set always bugs me. We reuse as much as possible, but there's always waste. Doing non theatre projects I always liked to think of things lasting a while. 20y for a roof or deck. Longer for drywall. Framing and concrete: indefinite lifespan.
A set? Just a few weeks.
