Am I Missing something with Alonso?

I think it's more about him burning bridges than him being unlucky. If he hadn't burned bridges with Mercedes in 2007, he would have been first in line for a Mercedes seat in the future.

As for some people rating him better than Hamilton, I guess it may be because he didn't have the outright fastest car during his Ferrari days, so he was seen as dragging a slow car to places it didn't deserve to be.

Also simply driving a Ferrari softens your image considerably. Ferrari fans back then really hated Vettel, which seems weird now.

When asked about 2007, his fans will throw all sorts of excuses. But in hindsight losing to Hamilton doesn't really look that bad.
