Am I the only one that gives a @#*$ about the rules?

I think you have some valid complaints (especially about how the rules were expressed), but I don't think the situation is quite so clear as you're portraying it.

I know at least some of the games you're talking about. SMS Racing was based on an older prototype, but they've been super open about that in their project description, and most people (including at Oculus) seem to be cool with that. Crashland Reborn pretty clearly shares a lot with the old Crashland, but its creator specifically asked Palmer if it was okay, and was told that it was, as long as it was not a direct port.

You're also talking about my entry, Tactera, which is a sequel / re-imagining of a prototype that I built in less than a day for an OCVR hackathon. I see why you're upset, but you have to realize that none of these three entries were started before the VR Jam began. None of them used any assets from previous versions, they all changed substantially, and they all were targeting the Gear VR for the first time. Perhaps it's like comparing Warcraft to Starcraft, where there are similarities, but it's still definitely a new game. Oculus stated that the rules were meant to avoid direct ports of old projects, and none of these entries fit that standard.

It's certainly true that the rules could have been made a lot more clear, as evidenced by the Crashland dev's post, linked above. In my case, I wanted to have absolute clarity before I began my project, saying "I worry that there's a big grey area between a direct port of an older game and something 100% new. I think I'll want to get my concept OK'd by someone in charge before I start." So, I spoke to several folks at Oculus in-person when I was at GDC, including people who were actually in charge of the VR Jam. I described my idea and the old prototype, and they assured me that it was legal. So, I built it and entered it into the Jam.

I get why you'd be upset, but I really think you should direct your frustration toward the lack of clarity in the written rules, rather than trying to disqualify projects like mine. I went out of my way to ensure it stayed within the rules, and I poured a lot of myself into building it. I really don't want to see it taken away after all that.
